Should I feed wet or dry food to a cat?
Переглядів 62 тис.Місяць тому
Big thanks to the Petlibro polar automatic wet food feeder for sponsoring this video (and existing). I was inspired to make this vid after learning that there is an automatic wet food feeder available for cats, which is kinda a game changer. In this video I talk a bit about what the differences about wet and dry commercially produces foods are, and what factors should be considered in deciding ...

I wish I had seen a video this informative years ago... my cat passed away in January, and she had a cough just like the one you showed. She would cough every day multiple times, and it got worse if she was ever held upside down. She first developed it years ago and my mom was convinced she had a hairball. We took her to the vet and they said the same. Didn't suggest an x-ray or blood test or anything, just listened to her lungs and said "probably a hairball." No hairball came for weeks, even with medicine. And when one eventually did come, she still coughed. We couldn't afford many vet visits since the flea medicine was so expensive already, so she unfortunately lived the rest of her life coughing. I'm not sure if that's what did her in, 'cause during her final few weeks she stopped eating, but her usual spasms started getting heavy and labored. After seeing that, I immediately took her to get put down. I feel so guilty that I let this family and that vet dismiss her cough for so long. I feel like I could have made her life so much easier for her if we had gone to that other vet sooner, but they said she was too far gone for her age. A part of me hopes it was just her time anyway, she lived for 15 years after all, and had several other problems that old cats tend to get. Still, I hate that I could've done more for her. I hope she loved me despite my failures as a pet owner, and I won't make the same mistakes for my other two babies.

I've been split feeding my 3 cats for about 7 months now, 6oz of wet in the morning shared between them & individual bowls of kibble later,. Weirdly, considering she's tried them so young, the younger girl (who is all of 14mo now) likes kibble, pate, finely chopped turkey & chicken, and fresh fly (if she can get it) but absolutely refuses the other textures of wet catfood. Our 6yo female & 14mo male are both firm believers in All The Food Noow!!

Switched to wet food (no grain) a few years ago and would not go back for my cats. I believe my cats are getting more water this way, and as they're getting older, I want to do what I can to stave off CKD. All anecdotal on my part, but I wouldn't go back to dry food for them.

Non clumping litter changed my life. Urine sinks to the bottom and you just scoop solids once in awhile. The "trick" is to use a lot of litter and the smell at the bottom can't get out. Change and wash the whole thing ever 2 weeks.

Would you want to eat dry pellets your entire life? If you're not sure, put down a bowl of dry and a bowl of wet and see what happens after a few times. The pet may continue eating dry just because it's what they're used to, but give them a choice for a while and see what happens.

Yeah it's very helpful. I have a foster kitty who has been prescribed a urinary diet. I was curious how exactly it works to change urine pH and dissolve crystals, so I looked up youtube videos on the topic. The top results were NOT veterinarians or veterinary nutritionists explaining it. They were unqualified people asserting that those foods were scams and you should just feed your animal a raw diet. Never mind how unrealistic that is for many people. The prescription diets are expensive, but the dry version comes out to $35 a month for a 12 pound cat. That is a hell of a lot cheaper than an emergency vet stay for a urinary obstruction. You can always just add water to the dry food if you can't afford the wet. Anyway sorry about the rant. I'm sure Hills, like any company, has serious issues, but that's no excuse to ignore the research and go against your vet's recommendations.

My cat Zippy was diagnosed in 2017 with kidney disease. She was on I.V. fluids for 5 days and she snapped out of it. Just a couple months ago she still had poor kidney function but did o.k. on some new food for kidneys. At that point she had been on kidney food for almost 6.5 years. In the last couple weeks she was not very interested in her food. She would eat, but just not a lot. I noticed her losing weight, but she still drank water and ate a little. Just 4 days ago she pretty much stopped eating. She had been sleeping a lot during the day and I noticed she wasn't walking very much. Since this happened over the weekend, I had no vet to take her to and was convinced she would make it. Well she didn't. I still feel bad that I did not catch it, but my markers are always that she stop eating and drinking and she didn't do that until the weekend. She died in my arms just 3 days ago. I loved her so much and still feel a little guilt. 💔

I’ve been having such a hard time with my cat for the past four months. She started going off her wet food, so I switched to a new food which she loved, but it didn’t agree with her system. And it was at the same time she started shedding her winter coat. I noticed she wasn’t entering the litter box as much and stated monitoring. She was pooping every three days and it was mostly dry with a little diarrhea at the end. She also seemed to be experiencing abdominal discomfort. But her general disposition was normal and no vomiting at all. Took her to the vet and they did a scan and she was chest to anus full of stool. They said take away any dry food and continue on the new wet (which was Tiki Cat mousse). No enema was given. A couple more weeks go by and no change. We go in again, her abdomen was still tender when palpated, and the second scan showed a lot of trapped gas, but less stool. Vet recommends prescription GI food and transition back to old wet food (Wellness brand). Cat refused prescription food but starts slowly going back to old food. After that, I found a rock hard little stool on the floor that was all hairball when pulled apart. Her stool frequency increased to every other day instead of every three once back on her old food. And hairballs in every stool. Vet said this isn’t normal and it could be IBD. Cat has no classic IBD symptoms though. Zero vomiting, no blood in stool, normal disposition. I took her to a second vet and the first doctor there thought it’s most likely slow digestion due to too much hair ingestion, but as long as the hairballs are passing in her stool it’s good. Other vet at the practice thinks maybe an ultrasound could be the way to go, and ran blood work to check hydration and organ function. Blood work came back normal. But cat is still being super finicky about wet food, I’m having to use appetite stimulant to get her to eat it. I reintroduced dry and she is willingly eating it. So now I don’t know if this is all a digestive issue that’s making her finicky about food, or a food aversion she has developed. Her movements are still every other day, and still hairballs in them. Her abdominal discomfort seems to have gone away, and was most likely caused by the trapped gas. But now I have an appointment at a third vet to see if they think she needs an ultrasound. Another thing I’m thinking with the wet food is that perhaps it’s her teeth. She does have gingivitis. So maybe the wet food is bothering her gums (she seems to swallow most of the dry food whole). I’m really at a loss here. But thank god for pet insurance. Because all these vet visits and tests have been pricey.

I am a veterinarian, and I can assure you conclusively, that you should feed your cat 3/4 wet food mixed in with 1/4 dry food. This is essential for hydration. Both should be of high quality. If a person feeds their children hot dogs 3 times a day, everyday, then I suggest these people don't get cats.

Thank you for your great advice. I just adopted 2 kittens after my one 18 1/2 yr old Siamese/ Persian/Birman went off to Heaven University. I say this because most 18 yr old humans are graduating high school and going off to college. I hope to teach my new furbabies the same manners and lifestyle that my previous baby had. I’m trying to incorporate some things that I should have done with my previous baby, like the adjustments from dry to wet food. I had to switch my previous baby to wet food due to kidney disease and she was a picky eater, she loved her kibbles. I spent hundreds trying all kinds of cans and wet food, until we found a non-can pate. Nutrition and her age of 15 was important while considering the kidney disease, so it was a balancing act of nutrition and keeping her happy. I wish I know then, what I know now. She might have stayed with me longer.

This took some experimentation to figure out, but we are both a lot happier now without the mess😁

My cat is about 18 years old and has chronic kidney disease. I have had good success using a whole chicken BARF diet supplemented with Chitosan, taurine and NAC. Also the meal size has been reduced to about 1 teaspoon four times per day. By restricting meal size you also decrease the processing burden on the internal organs like the kidneys. Smaller more frequent meals seems to work in the direction of overall health in humans as well. Larger meals overburden the organs and hormones and this eventually results in a disease process! Kiki is an old cat and she looks great! Thankfully her disease process is manageable but it took a lot of research and effort! 🐈🐈‍⬛

I have a snarfing barfer so I bought the cat mate 500 and I have multiple of those which automatically feed the cat wet food. Catmate Automated wet food cat feeder has been around for years.

Our vets advice was the same as the" babies: formula vs breast milk" debate: fed is best. You could be giving your cat the best ever cat food but if they don't want to eat it then it doesn't matter. We had one who loved his crunchy food and would not eat wet foods, and another who insisted on not just wet food but a different flavor and brand for each meal (so that was fun having multiple cans open in the fridge at a time)

I've had the Petlibro Polar feeder for a week and it really is pretty great. My sweet girl much prefers wet food, and this allows us to give her the several small meals per day she'd prefer. It's going to be a very useful took for us

My cat refuses to eat wet food. Dry kibble only for her! If I give her one of the varieties with some kind of gravy, she'll lap up all the gravy and leave the meat. Seems like such a waste! But the local crows love that I leave the meat out for them...
